Apprenticeships Q&A - Sophie Ball

Opinion

How did you decide that an apprenticeship would be the best route for you to kickstart your career?

After finishing my A levels, I knew an apprenticeship was the way to go for me. Why? Simple – I would get to learn and earn at the same time! Plus, I’m learning straight from industry professionals, picking up real skills and experience that you just can’t get from a classroom.

What industry skills have you learnt and developed through learning on the job?

The industry skills I have learnt and developed are:

Learned: Public speaking, Digital Communication, Crisis communication

Developed: Verbal Communication, Written Communication, Confidence, Active Listening, Nonverbal Communication

How do you see your career progressing after your apprenticeship?

After completing my apprenticeship, I hope to continue my journey at Safran by transitioning into a more permanent role within the in-house communications team. I’ve really enjoyed learning how internal communications help shape company culture and align teams, and I’d like to build further that foundation by taking on more responsibility in this area. At the same time, I’m also interested in exploring digital marketing. I believe gaining experience in areas such as social media strategy, content creation, and online campaigns would give me a more well-rounded skill set and allow me to contribute more broadly to Safran’s communication goals. Ideally, I’d like to grow into a role that allows me to bridge internal communications with external, digital-facing initiatives—helping to tell Safran’s story or another company’s story both inside and out.

What advice would you give to those considering an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a fantastic way to kickstart your career! You get hands-on experience, learn directly from the industry professionals and earn while you learn. It can be difficult at times but the skills and experience you gain are invaluable.
