How will your PR apprenticeship shape your career?

Lauren Cooper, PRCA Apprentice

Opinion

Six months in at 1284 Communications and I've discovered that apprenticeships are far more than just entry-level jobs.

After completing my A-Levels, I (like many others) found myself at a crossroads.

The pressure to decide my entire career path at that single point felt overwhelming.

Taking a year out to work full-time offered a temporary solution, but I quickly realised I was looking for more purpose and direction.

After looking into my options, I decided on an apprenticeship rather than university.

I was keen to gain first-hand experience working in PR. I wanted to develop my knowledge of corporate communications and media industry.

So when I saw the advert on Indeed for Account Executive at 1284 it was perfect that it included PRCA’s Public Relations and Communications Assistant Apprenticeship pathway too.

Unlike traditional university routes, the apprenticeship offered me:

  • Hands-on learning
  • Immediate industry exposure
  • The chance to develop practical skills while earning
  • Mentorship from colleagues with decades of senior media experience.

Skills I've developed

1284 specialises in B2B and G2B corporate communications, specialising in East Midlands innovation and regional economic development.

Working with 1284's client base of local authorities, spinouts and tech companies, I've gained critical skills in:

  • Crafting strategic press releases
  • Managing targeted social media campaigns
  • Developing compelling storytelling techniques
  • Analysing data to inform communication strategies.

Being in an agile consultancy environment has also sharpened my management of billable and CPD time.

One of the most valuable skills I've developed is storytelling. My colleagues are former journalists and I’ve learned first hand how to weave narratives that resonate with our clients' target audiences. It has been a steep learning curve but rewarding too.

Dispelling apprenticeship myths

A common misconception is that apprenticeships are only for trade jobs. Or that they are just about menial tasks like making coffee.

My experience has been the opposite. At 1284, I’ve been trusted with meaningful responsibilities, from contributing to client strategies to managing PR campaigns. After completion of probation I’ll be given responsibility for our nonprofit work.

This apprenticeship is not just about learning on the job - it provides a solid foundation for a successful career.

I'm excited to specialise in digital PR, focusing on supporting innovative East Midlands businesses, local authorities, and nonprofits.

Anyone feeling uncertain about their career path, an apprenticeship could be your perfect solution.
